Case Study:Superior

Background

Superior Cables Ltd., established in 1934, produces copper, aluminum, and fiber optic cables for telecommunication, power, and electronics. The company is divided into a Power cable division and a Telecommunication and Electronics cable division, covering the entire range of products from airfield lighting cables to zero halogen cables.

Based in Israel, Superior Cables Ltd. is listed on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) under “Superior Cables.” The company is directly active in the USA, Germany, and the UK, through established subsidiaries that are part of its worldwide distributor chain.

Among the company’s core values is a commitment to a clean, safe, and healthy environment, and it continually strives to improve its environmental performance.

Original Situation

The Superior Cables plants in Sha’ar Hanegev, Israel, were illuminated by over 500 units of 400W magnetic ballasts and lamps, which covered a total of 110,000 square meters. This lighting system configuration consumed over 2 million KWH per annum, and ran up hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy costs.

In 2004, Metrolight proposed a solution that would significantly cut the company’s energy costs. Superior Cables agreed to a pilot site, and would assess the situation after a one-year period.

The Solution

After running the pilot site using a system with fifty Metrolight Smart Electronic Ballasts for HID™, Superior Cables decided to deploy Metrolight products across the factory. The full solution included over 500 units of 320 Watt Smart Electronic Ballasts, with 320 Watt Metal Halide lamps set to 260 Watt by dimming.

All units were connected through the Metrolight Interface Junction Box to a central computer running the Metrolight Control™ application for intelligent operation and dimming, which is based on human activities and daylight harvesting.

The Result

Superior Cables Ltd. gained energy savings of 43%, and significantly reduced maintenance costs, while nearly doubling the light output. These excellent results were achieved despite using lower wattage lamps and further reducing their wattage by dimming.
